I have recieved many calls, recently, regarding home invaders of the critter variety.  Some of the folks who called were very shaken and visibly "unsettled" when I met with them.  Which brings me to this edition's subject.  This completely unscientific poll may help to discover why folks are "unsettled" by the sudden appearance of a critter in their domain.  Since fear is a learned behavior, I am curious to know what gives you the "heebie jeebies", and why?  How did you learn this fear?  Was it a personal experience?  Was it a warning from an elder?  Was it something you witnessed?  The following are common critters in our area.  Please list your #1 and why does it cause you to be, " unsettled"?

(1.) snakes / rattlesnakes  (2.) spiders / tarantulas  (3.) scorpions

(4.) bees / wasps  (5.) rats / rodents  (6.) bats

(7.) other - please explain  (8.) all of the above!

The value of this poll depends on your replies, so don't be bashful!

Number 1 and 3! You never know where you will see them and I fear getting stung or bit. That photo is freaking me out too!!!!!

Ok, 1 is by far the worst for me. I was hissed at by a harmless garden snake as a kid and to this day do not like snakes. Especially the kind with fangs and venom..

#2 Fear from Mother, plus they sneak up on you, crawl on you and BITE. Ugly creepy critters #3/4 A bee sting can actually kill me, so not taking a chance on what a scorpion sting would do or not do. Ephraim pen helps for 5 mins. can't even get to fire dept. in 5 mins.

Rattlesnakes, I don't like them for 2 reasons. 1. They are hard to see. We do a lot of hiking along creeks. Last year my husband leaped right over a timber rattler. I just happened to see it before my dog stepped on it. 2. I'm always worried for my dog. Scorpions are a second for me. I'm not paranoid about them, but I am just afraid it will hurt if I get stung by one. I'm not super afraid of spiders, but when I was a kid, my mom killed one on her ceiling. It happened to have babies on her back that spread everywhere. A day later there were hundreds of spiders on her ceiling. YUCK!

Thanks for the responses, everyone! The next question for you is, if you could meet these animals in a controlled, non-threatening environment, face to face, to learn more about them, and possibly overcome or reduce these fears, would you?
